BUYING A PUPPY

First and foremost, buy from a reputable breeder. Most important, before making the trip to see the puppy, is to research the background on the parents, and making sure they are all free of genetic hereditary problems.

When meeting your puppy for the first time, get down on the floor and let the puppy come to you. If the puppy shies away and won't make up to you, my advice is to look for another puppy, as shyness is very hard to overcome and is usually hereditary.

When you have made your choice, hold the puppy in your arms, slowly turn the puppy on its back, and lightly rocking it like a baby, put one hand under the chin and in the neck area, while rocking it.

I have found over the years of experience, if the puppy relaxes in your arms and doesn't grab at you, it will always be a good, stable dog. But this can be overcome by repeating this exercise every day until the puppy relaxes and gets confidence in you.

The Standard Poodle is a long-living dog. So remember it will be a family dog for a long time, you are not only getting a beautiful family member, but a monthly grooming expense.

Hoping that this will help a novice buyer in what to look for...
